February Meeting: Historic Preservation
and Tax Credits
Our next quarterly meeting will be held on Monday, February 7,
2011, at 7:00pm in the Assembly Room at the Swansboro Town Hall
(the original town hall, not the annex). Nancy Hollows, President
of Preservation Legal Action Trust (PLAT) in New Bern, will be
our speaker. Ms. Hollows will share her expertise on tax credits,
grants, and laws that have proved successful in New Bern preservation
efforts. Come and learn what similar opportunities may be available
for both individuals and businesses here in the Swansboro area.
Remember, our meetings are not open just to members, but anyone
in our community and surrounding area who may benefit. All are
welcome to this free program.
Stay In Touch With SHA News and Members
Over the past year the SHA has unveiled two online resources which
will allow our members to communicate more effectively. First,
the association's website may be accessed at HYPERLINK "http://www.swansborohistory.org"
http://www.swansborohistory.org. The site includes contact information,
meeting and membership information, a map of the Historic Swansboro
Walking Tour, and links that will allow us to post photographs
and historical documents. Please visit, and thanks for your patience
as we upload new material. Secondly, we also have a Facebook
page. This page includes lots of photographs, updates, and comments
from many members. The Facebook page is now open to all
who want access. Finally, award-winning local historian, Mary
Warshaw, a resident of Beaufort, has a great blog on Swansboro
history with much of interest. Find the blog at HYPERLINK "http://www.swansborohistory.blogspot.com"

Association News and Upcoming Events:
Celebration at St. Thomas African Methodist Episcopal Zion
Church
On Saturday, January 15, St. Thomas AME Zion Church celebrated
the history of their local church (1869) and the Freedman's School
(1868) that was once located beside the church. When driving by,
please notice the newly installed historic plaques. This event
would not have been possible without the work of the members of
St. Thomas, and the tireless efforts of Amelia Dees-Killette and
David Killette. Additionally, go online and read the article about
the event in the Tideland News (January 19th edition).
Sharing Swansboro History
Historic Walking Tours: From April-October, the SHA
will offer a monthly guided walking tour of the downtown historic
district. The tour will provide an overview of historic, architectural,
and environmental points of interest from the 1700s to the 1900s.
The first tour will begin at the Visitor's Center at the corner
of Church and Water Streets on Saturday, April 16, at 10:30am
and last for approximately one hour. The tour in May will be Tuesday,
May 24, at 4:00pm, and begin at the same location. Each tour will
accommodate up to 15 people. The tour is free, though donations
to the SHA will be accepted. Email us at HYPERLINK "mailto:swansborohistory@yahoo.com"
swansborohistory@yahoo.com to sign up for the tour and reserve
your spot. An email reply will confirm. Larger groups may make
special arrangements for a guided walking tour by contacting the
same email.
May Meeting "A Night at the Museum": Our
organization hopes that at some point in the future Swansboro
will have a local history museum. We also realize that many "museum"
items (not necessarily items of great value, but instead those
that tell our local story) are probably on your shelf, in your
attic, or buried under that forgotten stack of papers. During
our May meeting, we encourage you to bring in an item (or several)
to share that will tell part of Swansboro's history. We will have
display tables set up to allow attendees to wander about and view
the "museum" that you help create that night. We think
this will be great opportunity for the community to share their
personal collections of Swansboro history with others. Please
note that WE CAN NOT ACCOMMODATE GIFTS OF HISTORIC ARTIFACTS TO
OUR ORGANIZATION at this point. We do not have the capacity to
appropriately handle or the storage space for such gifts at this
time. If you have questions or would like more details about this
event in May, contact HYPERLINK "mailto:swansborohistory@yahoo.com"
swansborohistory@yahoo.com, or Bob Shuller at 910-391-9999.
We're Making News: As a member of the Federation
of North Carolina Historical Societies, the SHA was featured in
their December 2010 Federation Bulletin. Our article in
the Federation Bulletin has been reprinted elsewhere
in this newsletter.
