Swansboro Historical Association Newsletter
Fall 2010

You're Invited To A Seafood Dinner
All members (and please feel free to bring a guest) are invited to attend a seafood dinner on Monday, November 1, 2010, at 6:00pm, at the home of Bob and Mary K. Gardner, at 420 S. Chestnut Street, Swansboro, N.C. Several of our members will be cooking some of Swansboro's seafood delicacies for us to enjoy. Come enjoy the food and socialize with neighbors who share your enthusiasm for our town and its history.

Stay In Touch With SHA News and Members
Over the past year we have been slowly unveiling two online resources which will allow our members to communicate more effectively. First, the association's website may be accessed at http://www.swansborohistory.org. The site includes contact information, membership information, a map of the Historic Swansboro Walking Tour, and links that will allow us to post photographs, documents, and historical resources. Please visit, and be patient as we upload new material. Secondly, if you do Facebook, we have a page there as well. This page has proven quite popular, with lots of photographs, and updates and comments from many members. The Facebook page is now open to all who want access.

Association News and Upcoming Events
St. Thomas African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church Plaquing
Amelia Dees-Killette and David Killette have been working with St. Thomas AME Zion Church over the past several months to update their historic plaque, and also recognize the Freedman's School (ca. 1868) with its own separate plaque. Look for an upcoming article in the Tideland News.

Sharing Swansboro History
Many of you may wonder, just what exactly does our organization do, other than have four meetings every year? Well, several members of the SHA have made themselves available for talks to various civic, educational, and visiting tourist groups. In fact, inquiries to our organization have increased quite a bit since the debut of the webpage and the Facebook page. Just this month Anne Shuller spoke to the whole first grade (over 100 of them) at Queen's Creek Elementary School, Bob Shuller spoke to a group of out-of-town visitors, and Anthony James and Amelia Dees-Killette gave a walking tour for retreatants visiting town from the Rocky Mount Unitarian-Universalist Church. If you know of a civic or social group that would like a speaker on the history of Swansboro, or a group interesting a guided walking tour, please email the organization, or get in touch so we can set something up. Lastly, as a member of the Federation of North Carolina Historical Societies, the SHA will be featured in their December 2010 Federation Bulletin. The Federation Bulletin is available online through their website.

Downtown Candlelight Shopping Volunteer Opportunity
On Saturday, November 13, the downtown merchants will host their annual Shopping by Candlelight, to kick off the holiday season. The Swansboro Historical Association will be set up next to the Fish House Jewelry Store (on Front Street) serving hot beverages and cookies to downtown visitors. We will also share information about our organization, membership, and remind people of the various SHA items (prints, note cards, pamphlets, and T-shirts) available for sale in the Fish House. If you see the Johnson's, please thank them for selling our items in their store. Remember, all proceeds from sold items return to the SHA. To volunteer, contact swansborohistory@yahoo.com.

Memberships
If you know of someone who would like to join the SHA, please share this information with them.
